Reblogged from The Alternative Department for Transport:
Note: This piece is about how cycle campaigners present themselves, and therefore cycling, to the media and the public. Maybe that's not clear, or maybe people comment without reading the article, but I don't want to hear about your daily commute in the dark from Land's End to John O'Groats.
Also, there are comments from people behind Pedal on Parliament…

Hear hear! I totally agree. And you don’t need a carbon frame to cycle either. You can just ride a cheap fun old clunker. I wish that message was shared more too – about not needing to spend thousands on a bicycle.
Great post.

Though helmets are compulsory here in Australia so best wear one if you come to a rally here

I know the amount some people spend makes my eyes water
Just out of interest if it wasn’t compulsory to wear a helmet in Australia, would you still wear one? (I am a helmet wearer by the way, but believe in personal choice
)

Whether I would wear a helmet would depend on the circumstances. For road and mountain bike riding I would wear my helmet. But for cruising around in urban / bikeway riding I wouldn’t because the risks are lower (mostly no cars and low speed)
